VW’s new software changes only lab results – New Technology

The cheats diesels Volkswagen corrected in Europe releases in reality as much NOx as before, shows the new German tests.

– This is exactly what I expected, says Per Öhlund Transport Agency.

the Volkswagen owners who felt cheated after the revelation that the company cheated emission purification of diesel engines can continue to feel cheated.

the engines are in reality not one bit greener after the company corrected them. The measurements show that the German car magazine Auto Motor und Sport conducted on the hitherto sole model in which Volkswagen fixed cheating software, pickup Amarok.

The newspaper measured the emissions and fuel consumption of two identical cars, one with fake software, which made the car passed the emission limits of the Euro 5 when tested in the lab, but not in the way.

the other car had received a software update, which will ensure that it always stays within the law.

the result is summarized as follows: Performance is unchanged. Fuel Combustion increased slightly. And emissions are equal to the fixed car. Emissions of nitrogen oxides is 1.5 g per kilometer, 8.5 times the Euro 5 limit of 0.18 g / km.

– This is exactly what I expected. During normal driving, you will not notice any difference, says Per Öhlund, investigator at the Transport Board.

But the German regulator KBA (Kraftfahrt Bundes-AMT) has approved the update and says that the car is legal. How does that work?

– This means that it can cope with the emission limits when it runs in the lab according to the European test cycle NEDC (New European Driving Cycle), which has not so much with the real driving to do. This is about big diesel engines of 2 liters where a very small portion of the engine operating range used in the test. Among other things, the test is performed at a temperature of between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. When running outside the test cycle comes to no emissions limits. This is about law, not about morality or the environment.

So, when running outside the test cycle, the engine is identical as before. Is it really legal?

– Yes. The only difference from before is that emissions go down if the real driving end of the temperature / load area covered by the test cycle.

Will it be the same with all the millions of cars that VW will update and clean from cheating software?

– In Europe, yes. The US has a tougher cycle and where the authorities have not yet approved any of the measures that VW has proposed. It is known in the EU to present NEDC test method is not good, and it has recently adopted a new, RDE (Real Drive Emissions). But it will only apply from next year.

Fewer than 500 fixed

The diesel model designation EA189, made from model year 2009 to model year 2015, manipulated .

a small computer program allows the car to recognize when the engine is run in a test lab. Among other things, checking it on the steering wheel and the wheels move in a way that it does on the road. When the computer program notice that the car is running in the lab turn it on software that optimizes the engine to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides and particulates. In normal traffic the motor is controlled by another software that optimizes performance and fuel consumption.

In Sweden 225 000 cars of Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda and Seat with motors in sizes 2.0, 1.6 and 1.2 liters concerned. So far, fewer than 500 fixed.
