Closed wireless devices a security threat – forskning.se

– Wireless routers are a major security threat. Most routers contain software which is four to five years old already at the time of purchase, and many are full of security holes. It is worrying because an increasing proportion of network traffic goes through routers, which can intercept traffic, spreading viruses or even initiate their own cyber attacks, says Anna Brunstrom, professor of computer science at Karlstad University.

The question of wireless devices such as routers is current right now since both the EU and the US agree to revise the requirements that products classified as radio equipment must meet to be sold. The argument for the framework is that it wants to prevent the radio signals interfere with each other, by not allowing changes in the software and thus close the unit.

The problem is that if units are shut, the owner of a unit is no longer install new software to frequent security or better performance. It will not be possible for scientists to experiment for new and better solutions.

– We are seeing more and more examples of the problems of closed units where it is not possible to access the software, says Toke Høiland -Jørgensen, a doctoral student in computer science at Karlstad University.

– One example is the problem of security, but we also want to use these devices in our research, which is impossible if they are closed, then we can not even verify that they are functioning should. Safety and performance in the Future Internet Research in recent years has proved increasingly clear that the ability to install open source software, primarily WiFi equipment is the only way to secure not only the opportunity for further development and research, but also the safety and performance of tomorrow’s Internet. It is also central to reducing the amount of electronic waste as software upgrades extends hardware life.

Researchers at the Computer Science at Karlstad University have therefore, together with more than 260 Internet experts worldwide chosen to take part in an international campaign that seeks to influence the design of the acquis to the current problems of wireless devices can be solved . Karlstad University has also decided to send in a consultation response to the government regarding the implementation of radio equipment directive (N2015 / 5144 / ITP).

The overarching tool that campaign wants to highlight is simply: openness. The campaign advocates that the new framework should require that the software is made available to independent inspection before the equipment can be approved for sale. Another requirement is that the producer guarantees that updating the equipment in accordance with current practices for software, primarily for security updates.

– by requiring producers of wireless devices meets these rather simple requirements, we could improve both the security and performance of all our network significantly, says Toke Høiland-Jørgensen.

Campaign
The campaign was started by Dave Täht (now employed at Karlstad University) along with Vint Cerf, co-inventor of the Internet, and has been driven in project Bufferbloat.ne external link, opens in new window > t.

Connect Windows 10 to shared resources in Windows XP – M3

Hello,

The home’s large hard drive sitting on a computer running Windows XP (Computer A). On this, I have of course a lot of shared resources. On my laptop (computer B), I drove with Windows 7 for several years and have always come to what I have on my server. The other day was the computer B with Windows 10 and now I can no longer access the Computer A. On Computer A requires all divisions username and password. When trying to connect to computer B, I am told that the password is wrong. I know it’s not, then I readily able to connect from another XP computer in the house. All computers use the same workgroup name. Firewalls and antivirus software are currently disabled. I think I’ve tested all the settings that I judged to be relevant in the “advanced sharing settings” in computer B, but apparently not found the right. What am I doing wrong?

This issue is certainly in more places in this forum (I have searched but not found), please send references to other threads with this problem.

Audi “infected” by the VW scandal – 2.1 million cars have exhaust Cheats – Auto Motor & Sport

VW scandal over manipulated software that hides high NOx emissions are growing by the day. Now Audi announces that 2.1 million cars globally engines using “exhaust cheating.” 1.42 million of these are in Europe and the models affected are the A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3 and Q5 and TT.

Although it is the Audi on the plastic cover, it’s a VW diesel, with the “cheat software.”

The diesel engines Volkswagen fitted with a special control software – which temporarily lowers exhaust emissions when tested – are also available in other brands within the VW Group.

Now, informs Audi that in total there 2.1 million cars that use the engines in question. 1.42 million of these are in Europe and 577 000 rollers in Germany. How many people are in Sweden, there is no indication but would presumably involve several thousand. The current models with “VW engines” are the Audi A1, A3, A4, A5, A6, Q3 and Q5 and TT. The engine type was launched in 2009 but it is uncertain whether it is still in production.

Volkswagen has not provided any concrete information about what will happen to the cars that are on the market. With the special software will NOx emissions too high and engines comply therewith not the legal requirements, for example in the EU.

According to the newspaper Bild am Sonntag, the State traffic authority Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt (KBA) demanded that Volkswagen later October 7 presents how to meet the current emission regulations. Unless Volkswagen has an acceptable explanation on how to proceed threatens KBA to withdraw certification for current models.

Bentley, Lamborghini (not using diesel engines) and Porsche have announced that they will not be affected but most likely there EA189 engine even at Skoda and Seat.

I understood beforehand, this scandal is not limited to Volkswagen.

Every third Swedish has been exposed to IT security attack – Dagens Industri

Every third Swedish’ve ever been exposed to a hacking or an IT security attack private or at work, and nearly half of Swedes worry that an invasion or an attack will befall them . This shows a recent survey that maps the Swedes’ view of IT security, conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the IT security Sentor.

Never before have the Swedes have been so afraid to suffer an IT security attack. Virtually every other Swedish, 45 percent of the population, are afraid to suffer. It is perhaps not so surprising, since one-third (33 percent) of respondents in the survey as IT security Sentor behind, say they have been victims of some form of hacking and IT security attack.

An IT security attack in this context can be, for example infection by Trojans and ransomware, but it can also be targeted attacks in order to get over social media accounts and credit card details.

– As of we store more data digitally obviously increases the risk of attacks. Our opinion is that we in Sweden are still some way behind when it comes to protecting us compared with other countries. We’re a little naive and doubt that an attack will affect just us. That one-third of Swedes have been subjected to some form of IT security attack is obviously worrying but not surprising, says Anders Söderström, CEO of Sentor.

The Swedes increasingly aware of the risks – but has poor knowledge

For the first time, the number of people who are concerned about a data breach or an IT security attack (45 percent) more – than those who do not worry (43 percent). 53 percent also indicate that they wish they were better informed on issues related to IT security.

– There is clearly a knowledge gap. Many Swedes do not realize there where the virus as they have been on the computer not only “Segar down” the computer but also spying on you, or use your computer in a so-called bot-nets in order to attack a bigger target, continues Anders Söderström, CEO Sentor.

– There is much you as an individual can do to avoid being hit. But one of the most important is to choose a strong password and have different passwords for all services. By also sure to keep the software updated and be restrictive regarding the links and attachments that you open, you can get a good bit, concludes Anders Söderström, CEO of Sentor.

* * *

4 Tips – How can you avoid getting an IT security attack

The first Choose strong passwords – See also to having unique passwords for each service. For the main accounts, it is also recommended to use two-factor authentication, such as that at login will receive a code to their mobile phone as you enter.

2. Update software to the latest version – Attackers find current vulnerabilities in software. Suppliers trying to plug these security holes on updates of the software and it is important to frequently install these updates. Many software can be configured to be automatically updated whenever there are updates.

third Do not click on links and attachments – Be restrictive which links and files you click on as many viruses spread in this way. Often you can move the mouse pointer over a link without clicking, to see exactly where the link leads. Is not that a URL that really are connected with the sender should not click on the link.

4th Never give out personal information – over the phone or by mail if you are absolutely sure that you are communicating with the right person. It is increasingly common to people contact and pretend to be from a specific company or authority. If in doubt, ask for the name and phone number, and call yourself.
