The program, which color the black-and-white images – New Technology

A program that turns grsåskalebilder to color photos can be tested by the computer-trades.

Researchers at the University of California at Berkeley have created a software program that automatically color the black-and-white images. With machine learning, they have developed a method in which over one million color images reviewed to obtain data on the colors of various objects. When a new black and white image is processed by the software identifies the objects and painted the same color as similar items in the analyzed images.

The colors in the image produced is then not always the “right” but can still be perceived as realistic, writes Peta Pixel.

In one test, participants were examining pairwise photos, one of which was a color original and the other the same image that was first converted to a grayscale image and then color added with the new software.

In 20 percent of cases did the subjects that the colorized image was the original which is a much higher percentage than when similar colorization methods previously tested.

the researchers have not published anything easy to use applications for the coloring but the source code is available for free download for those with little computer knowledge to test the method.

Petapixels hope is that some manufacturers of image editing programs like Photoshop licenses the technology and build it as a filter in his program.
