Transparent gives increased control over personal information online – Karlstad … – Mynewsdesk (press release)

What happens to my personal data on the Internet? Who knows what about me? These are questions that have so far been difficult to answer. In computer science at Karlstad University will now developed a software, Transparent, which will give users more control over their personal information.

Most people have at some time left the personal data when they bought a product or notified to a service on the internet. We participate in social media and tell about ourselves on the web, often without thinking about how information about us is used. So far it has been difficult to change or even see the information companies have on one.

Cloud Services enables an organization to outsource parts of their operations, such as information storage and analysis, by a third party . This also sensitive information. For example, it emerged recently that Ehälsomyndighetens new service “Health for me” will store the Swedes health data on Microsoft servers in other countries, who may not have as good information.

Increased transparency and better protection

A4Cloud is a multinational research project that aims to increase the transparency of cloud services, and also make it easier for individuals to view, edit and delete their personal data. In this way it is hoped also to increase confidence in the cloud services on the web. The upcoming data protection regulation as the EU is expected to decide on the 2015, includes demands for greater rights and better protection for individuals, something that the tools developed in A4Cloud to help with.

Karlstad University is one of the partners in project, and this is now underway developing a software that will enable users to get an overview of their information and where it has gone.

Democratic Rights

– The tool, called Transparent, is intended to strengthen the rights of individuals to control which organizations have even information to which the information is and edit it, says Simone Fischer-Hübner, professor of computer science and project managers. Ultimately, it is about strengthening our democratic rights. In the wrong hands, the information that we currently can not see or do anything to be used for many different purposes. Transparent is a way to change that.

What the research team at the Computer Science hope is to make a greater transparency and openness to a competitive advantage. Companies that want to be credible on the web have to disclose some of the information they own and open the possibility to edit it. There is some resistance to this, because companies rightly worried that trade secrets. It is therefore important to achieve a balance that protects both businesses and individuals.

Can be as common as the internet bank

– Some companies are more open than others, says Tobias Pulls, PhD in Computer Science. For example, Google and Facebook is relatively transparent. However, all services are different, and there are no standards, so there is much work to find ways to get the data so that it can be presented to the user.

– Transparent is a kind of control of individuals, says Julio Angulo, PhD in informatics. He works together with Simone Fischer-Hübner to create the interface for the software. Among other things, will be able to see what information the service has about one and read the warnings for various events relating to your information. We can imagine that in the future will be Transparent a tool that will be used as often as we currently use our online banking.
