Wikimedia Sweden now deepening cooperation with Umeå University, specifically the master’s program Human-Computer Interaction and Social Media at the Department of Informatics. The focus of the collaboration is to translate FOSS to Swedish translation by platform translatewiki.net. Students will be involved and to translate Swedish MediaWiki, the software including Wikipedia uses. Many messages to MediaWiki has already been translated, but it added to the thousands of new messages every year to be translated – and now comes the Umeå University students to help. While other open source software will be translated by the students of the time and interest.
A computer program or a web site contains lots of text displayed to the user. This is for example the texts that appear on the keys, or the error message that pops up when something goes wrong. The developer of the program often creates text in English only. For anyone not fluent in reading English, this is not very user friendly, and limit the ability of many people.
“To translate all the lyrics will be very important and could potentially lead to the open software make even greater achievements . Can we strengthen the group of translators, exciting things happen. The students are used to working with English terms and can hosts – so they are perfect for the task, “said John Andersson, Project Manager at Wikimedia Sweden.
Wikimedia Sweden has previously worked together with Umeå University, including project Umepedia (http://umepedia.se/) and now wants to deepen cooperation even further when universities are leaders in IT – both research and education.
“It is important for students to try to work with open platforms and social media, such as Wikipedia, are an important part of the internet’s development. The students are doing now is a first activity in a more long-term cooperation between us and Wikimedia – both against our training for the IT research we conduct, “says Mikael Wiberg, Professor of Informatics at Umeå University.

translatewiki.net is a localization platform for översättargemenskaper, communities and free and open projects. In translatewiki.net translated MediaWiki, the software behind Wikipedia, and another 26 projects of 6,600 users to 223 different languages.
