ABB has won an order worth more than 160 million from Eskom, South Africa’s state electricity company, the advanced control systems, software and instrumentation for the power station Kusile with a capacity of 4800 megawatts (MW), which is under construction near Witbank in the northeastern part.

Kusile become the world’s fourth largest coal-fired power plants, with aims to strengthen South Africa’s electricity. It is one of the new generation of power plants that operate under high pressure and steam temperature, so-called supercritical coal plants, and whose effectiveness is significantly higher than conventional coal plants with lower emissions and reduced fuel costs.
Kusile will be the first in Africa using wet avsvavlingsteknik (FGD, flue gas desulphurization) in all of its boilers. Eskom, which generates more than 90 percent of its electricity from coal, is now installing high-tech technology for so-called clean coal power in one of its largest facilities to ensure a long term and reliable source for the region’s basic electricity supply.

Strengthens Company’s position
ABB will supply a complete control and instrumentation solution for the entire plant, including the control of boilers and plant simulation, design, installation, commissioning, optimization and training. The project will strengthen ABB’s position as a supplier of advanced automation and control technology for energy companies globally, as well as in southern Africa, where ABB has already supplied systems in South Africa, Lesotho, Malawi, Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo.
– ABB’s advanced and energy-efficient technologies will help increase electricity generation and secure electricity supplies to South African consumers, said Claudio Facchin, head of ABB’s Power Systems division.
– We are excited to be continuing to contribute to the development of South Africa’s power infrastructure with our power, automation and software solutions.
