Microsoft has acquired the British company SwiftKey, a software company behind a popular virtual keyboard for mobiles. The purchase price is approximately $ 250 million according to sources Recode.

The deal confirmed on Wednesday morning by SwiftKey on the company’s blog.

According described the purchase as a which reflects Microsoft’s tendency to want to buy at a better position in the mobile segment. IT giant has in recent months made acquisitions of software that specifically works on competing devices, such as e-mail program Acompli and calendar app Sunrise.

Meanwhile, it is worth noting that the latest acquisition takes place in the wake of Microsoft’s decision to scale back on their Windows Phone ambitions. So far, thousands of jobs have been cut, and the company has basically written off the entire value of the acquisition of Nokia’s mobile device.

SwiftKey has a rival in the same segment and there is Swype, which for several years has Nuance as owner.
