The engine shakes started. A six-cylinder sharp sound that is felt in the spine. The engine is old Volvo T6 engine at 305 horsepower with new turbo and laddkylare. I look around: Most of it looks like normal, a little carbon fiber center console, black headlining, a special outfit with Polestar logos on.
Let’s first find out the name Polestar. It is a motorsports company in Gothenburg, formed in 1996 for Volvo’s racing efforts. Last year began selling “Polestar cars” produced at Volvo’s production line and sold at select Volvo dealers – that the car you are reading about right now.
I put in the drive position on the six-speed automatic transmission . Thanks to new software switches faster on the way out of town. The car goes surprisingly smoothly over broskarvarna at St. Erik bridge in Stockholm, despite the 20-inch tires. Wiggling to the gear selector from D to S sport mode traction control switched off, the box gets even faster gear changes and four-wheel drive from Haldex makes the car more rear wheel drive.
But you can also change gear manually. I pull the gear paddle behind the steering wheel towards me and sucked off. An overtaking on E4, the entire car to be a lion – a valve in the exhaust system is opened and the air flow bypasses the rear muffler. After ten mil I try limits on an echoing empty road and realize that it’s the most fun to drive Volvo ever. Polestar has namely changed more than you think under the hood.
But the car is not bold pioneer action. The factory trim, Volvo Cars has remained deeply in the Swedish soul since the 60s, but blossomed in earnest in 1995 with T-yellow, thus upphottade Volvo 850 model in the T-5R version and 240 horsepower. You could almost hear the hum in unison from the Swedish cottages then.
Like the T-yellow manufactured V60 Polestar in a limited edition to raise stardom, but it still does not meet the biggest stars. The smurfblå can not seriously challenge the BMW M3 or Mercedes C 63 AMG. And really, it is too expensive to attack the layer below. But what does it do? A finely tuned Volvo hits still straight in the Swedish soul.
Engine / transmission
The engine is soft as a whisper at low revs, but when the control system opens the valves in the exhaust at full throttle, it will be smooth lamb a roaring lion. The automatic transmission gears pilsnabbt, but worse than, say, Porsche’s double-clutch gearbox.
Driving
I proclaim it to the funniest Volvo ever. It is not a track car, but almost. The roll stabilizers are 25 percent harder, the stiffer shocks from Öhlins does wonders and the entire brake system replaced. It also feels undramatic, even in hard-pressed situations. A quite good rating.
Economy / Environment
SEK 650 000 is sweaty, even if the car is crammed with equipment. Svettigare becomes when compared with a competitor like BMW 335xDrive passing of 490 000 SEK. It pulls easily over 2 liters per mil when driving hard and even environmentally gets low rating.
Security
Polestar has entered the mass of active safety systems such as auto brake, pedestrian and cyclist warner, warner fescue, active high beam. And everything is original. It is very good. Obviously the maximum 5-star Euro-NCAP.
Overall
Volvo V60 Polestar is an extremely competent V60 changed on many points. It is not up to the real peaks BMW M3 but then Polestar have had to change a lot more. But it is still the most competent and funny Volvo ever.
